"When the female form emerges in my work, she is strong, and vibrant, a force of nature, someone to be reckoned with. She is often a creature of myth, like Medea, the Celtic summer queen or a mermaid. Sometimes she appears as the Mother, the Maid or the Crone. In all her manifestations, my "Quilted Goddesses" are my attempt to tap into that powerful spirit hidden inside."

Three Sisters $4000 N/A

Kim H. Ritter ©1998; photo by Mike McCormick
58" x 47"
Silk, cotton, resist, and dye. Hand painted and machines quilted.

Like the Three Fates of Greek mythology, or the Three Norns of Norse mythology, this trio of sisters cross the boundaries of time: the past, the present and the future. One looks over her shoulder to the past, one is fully a part of the present, one is pregnant with the future.

This quilt crosses the boundary between quilt and painting. It was made using a new whole cloth technique employing the sewing machine to draw a contour line drawing freehand onto a sandwich of silk top, batting and backing. A water-based resist is used to cover the lines of quilting and then the piece is painted with silk dyes, utilizing various water colour techniques. This is followed with successive layers of quilting and painting.
